At the press conference announcing information about the 13th Congress of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor (term 2023 - 2028) on December 3, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor Ngo Duy Hieu explained more clearly about the union's proposal to add 2 more days off for National Day.
Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor, explains the proposal to add 2 more days off on National Day.
Accordingly, gathering 445 opinions of workers nationwide through trade union congresses at all levels, the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor proposed that competent authorities consider adding 2 days off on the occasion of National Day, from September 2 to September 5 every year, so that workers have the opportunity to take their children to school on the opening day of the new school year.
According to Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu, when collecting opinions on amending the Labor Code in 2019, the Ministry of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs provided information on the number of holidays in some regions and around the world, in which the average number of holidays in Southeast Asian countries is 15 - 16 days, while Vietnam is 11 days.
Regarding the proposal to increase the number of holidays on the occasion of National Day on September 2, Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu said that it is to "meet the expectations and wishes" of workers. According to him, for many workers working in shifts, asking for time off to take their children to school on the opening day is very difficult. Mr. Hieu emphasized that taking children to school on the opening day is "the desire of many workers".
Currently, National Day is a 2-day holiday, the union proposed to add 2 more days, increasing it to 4 days, so that workers have time to take their children to school.
Mr. Ngo Duy Hieu cited that in China, there was a time when National Day was off for up to a week, this is also an experience for us to refer to in the process of considering the proposal. "When income increases, life is guaranteed, we raise the issue of increasing holidays as necessary" - Vice President of the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor emphasized.
