Lotus root (Nodus Nelumbinis) is a lotus root sprout, usually taken from the large root stem lying in the mud of ponds and lakes. Lotus root contains starch, asparagine, arginine, trigonellin, tyrosine, glucose; vitamins: C, A, B, PP and a little tannin. According to Oriental medicine, lotus root has a sweet and astringent taste, neutral properties, and enters the liver, heart and stomach meridians. It has the effect of astringent, hemostatic, yang tonic, and sedative.
The raw form has the effect of clearing heat, nourishing yin, cooling blood and dispersing stasis. It treats heat diseases with fever, restlessness, thirst, dehydration, hemoptysis, nosebleeds, hematuria, hematuria, cloudy urine, frequent urination, and painful urination. The cooked form has the effect of strengthening the spleen, stimulating appetite, nourishing blood and producing body fluids, and stopping diarrhea and dysentery. Treat anorexia, poor appetite, slow digestion, anemia, dry skin, dry mouth and throat, thirst. Daily use 10g - 250g, squeeze to get the juice (use raw), cook, stir-fry, stew.
Some ways to use lotus root as medicine:
Treat bleeding: roasted lotus root, tam lang, nga truật, huyet du, roasted Bồ hoàng, each 8g; bach thao sương, 6g. Boil and drink, 1 dose per day.
Treat hematuria due to acute urinary tract infection: 20g raw rehmannia, 16g active stone; tieu ke, moc thong, lotus root, roasted Bồ hoàng, dam truc diep, son chi, each 12g; roasted licorice, 6g dang quy. Boil and drink.
Treat dengue fever: lotus leaf, lotus root (eclipta prostrata), gotu kola, each 30g; cotton plantago 20g. Boil and drink, 1 dose per day; if there is bleeding, increase the amount of lotus leaf and lotus root to 40 - 50g.
Cure menorrhagia: 24g roasted turtle shell, 20g motherwort, 16g raw rehmannia; 12g each of scutellaria root, lotus root, a giao, Chinese clematis root, and earthworm; 10g ground bone, and 4g licorice. Boil and drink. Cure tuberculosis, blood in phlegm, and heat deficiency: use Tam tien am: 120g tien mao can, 60g tien tieu ke, 120g tien ngu tiet. Boil and drink. Has the effect of cooling blood and stopping bleeding.
Medicinal dishes with lotus root:
Lotus root juice: 60 - 100ml lotus root juice, drink at once. Used for people with crab and fish poisoning, bronchitis, coughing up blood...
Fresh lotus root and sugarcane juice: 100g fresh lotus root, 50ml sugarcane juice. Squeeze lotus root to get the juice, mix with sugarcane juice; divide into 2 drinks per day. Use when having flu, heat stroke, sunstroke or due to dryness causing irritation, restlessness, fever, thirst.
Fresh lotus root and ginger juice: 30 - 50g fresh lotus root, 5 - 8g fresh ginger, squeeze to get the juice, divide into 3 times a day. Use when having persistent vomiting, thirst.
Lotus root and radish juice: 50g fresh lotus root, fresh rehmannia, fresh radish, squeeze to get the juice; 1 cup 100ml each time, drink with hot sugar water. Use for people with frequent urination, painful urination.
Stewed lotus root: 150 - 200g fresh lotus root, stewed until soft. The effect is to nourish the five internal organs, and nourish the lower digestive system.
Stewed green beans with lotus root: 100g fresh lotus root, 50g green beans. Wash the lotus root, slice it, crush the green beans; cook thoroughly and eat. Good for people with red eye (conjunctivitis).
Lotus root stewed with jujube: 150g lotus root, 250g jujube. Cook until soft, filter the water to drink. Used for people with subcutaneous hemorrhage, bleeding gums due to thrombocytopenia. It also acts as an appetizer and aids digestion.
